# Module "Settings" (System) {#system-tools-settings}

Only available if [`typo3/cms-install`](https://packagist.org/packages/typo3/cms-install) is installed.

The backend module **System > Settings** offers tools
to system maintainers regarding **global** settings that affect the complete
TYPO3 installation.

## Extension configuration (global) {#admin-tools-settings-extension}

Here you can set global extensions settings. Changes are stored in file
`config/system/settings.php` under the `EXTENSIONS` key. You can
override extension settings in file `config/system/additional.php`,
using the `$GLOBALS['TYPO3_CONF_VARS']['EXTENSION']` variable.

Extensions can define global settings in
[ext_conf_template.txt](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:extension-options@14.3).

## Change install tool password {#admin-tools-settings-password}

You can use this tool to easily change the install tool password from
within the backend or install tool.

You can also use command vendor/bin/typo3 install:password:set
to change the install tool password.

## Manage system maintainers {#admin-tools-settings-maintainer}

This tool can be used to grant or revoke
[system maintainer](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:system-maintainer@14.3)
permissions from backend administrators.

## Configuration presets {#admin-tools-settings-presets}

Some [system configuration settings](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:typo3confvars@14.3)
(`$GLOBALS['TYPO3_CONF_VARS']`) are commonly used in combination or with
predefined values for certain use cases. Configuration presets can be used to
configure these settings.

### Cache settings {#admin-tools-settings-cache}

TYPO3 features a flexible [caching](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:caching)
system with a default configuration that is ideal for most use cases.

Depending on your individual hosting setup, the performance of your
TYPO3 instance can be optimized even further by adjusting the storage type.

### Debug settings {#admin-tools-settings-debug}

Depending on the [Application Context](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:application-context@14.3)
debug settings are set to live (in Production context, no debugging) or debug (in
Development context, debugging enabled). The debug setting presets turn
debugging on and off with just two clicks.

### Image handling settings {#admin-tools-settings-image}

These presets can be used to configure paths to Graphics Magick or Image Magick.

### Mail handling settings {#admin-tools-settings-mail}

This preset can be used to configure commands used to send mails.

### Password hashing settings {#admin-tools-settings-password-hashing}

Allows you to switch the [password hashing algorithm](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:password-hashing@14.3).

## Feature toggles {#admin-tools-settings-feature-toggles}

This tool enables and disables Core features. See
[Feature toggle API](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:feature-toggles@14.3)
for details.

## Configure installation-wide options {#admin-tools-settings-typo3confval}

In this tool most values in the
[TYPO3_CONF_VARS array in the settings.php](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:typo3confvars@14.3)
can be changed.

Values that have been overridden in file `config/system/additional.php`
are not displayed here.

Some settings, for example [DB - Database connections](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/t3coreapi:typo3confvars-db@14.3),
cannot be viewed or changed here for security reasons.
