# Add a category filter {#quick-filter}

The filter lets visitors show and hide events by category. It consists of one or
more *category filters*, each a group of categories.

1. Create a record **Category filter** in a folder.

1. Enter a title (shown as headline of the group) and select the categories of the group.
1. Select the filter in the plugin, sheet [Event filter](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/mediaessenz/fullcalendar:plugin-sheet-filter@5.0).

1. Make sure the header or footer toolbar contains the button **Filter**
    ([header and footer](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/mediaessenz/fullcalendar:plugin-sheet-header@5.0)). It is part of the default toolbar.

A click on the button opens the filter:

## How the groups work {#how-the-groups-work}

- Within a group, every checked category shows its events (OR).
- An event is only visible if it matches **every** group (AND). So with two
    groups, e.g. "Topic" and "Location", an event needs a category of each group.
- The checkboxes use the color of the category.
- Categories restricted to frontend user groups are only shown to these users.
- The choice of the visitor is saved in the browser (local storage).
