# Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) {#faq}

## General Questions {#faq-general}

### What is llms.txt? {#faq-what-is-llms-txt}

`llms.txt` is an emerging standard for providing AI and Large Language Model
(LLM) crawlers with structured information about a website. It helps AI systems
understand your website's content and structure. See the
[llmstxt.org specification](https://llmstxt.org/) for details.

### Why should I use this extension? {#faq-why-use}

- **Better AI understanding** of your website content
- **Structured access** for chatbots and RAG systems
- **Clean Markdown output** without navigation, scripts, or styling
- **Multi-language support** out of the box
- **Optional protection** with API keys

## Installation Questions {#faq-installation}

### I get a 404 error when accessing /llms.txt {#faq-404-error}

Make sure you have:

1. Added the **Site Set** to your site configuration
1.  Cleared all caches: `vendor/bin/typo3 cache:flush`

See [Activate the Site Set](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/rtfirst/llms-txt:installation-site-set@main) for details.

### The LLM tab doesn't appear in page properties {#faq-no-llm-tab}

1. Verify the extension is installed: `vendor/bin/typo3 extension:list`
1.  Clear the system cache
1. Log out and log back into the TYPO3 Backend

## Configuration Questions {#faq-configuration}

### How do I exclude specific pages? {#faq-exclude-pages}

You have two options:

1. **Site Settings**: Add page UIDs to `llmsTxt.excludePages` (comma-separated)
1. **Per Page**: Check "Exclude from llms.txt" in the page's LLM tab

### How does the priority setting work? {#faq-priority}

Pages with higher priority values (0-100) appear earlier in the llms.txt
page list, before the other pages with the same parent page. The list follows
the page tree, so a page never leaves its branch. Use this to highlight
important pages for AI crawlers:

-   80-100: Main landing pages
-   50-70: Important content
-   20-40: Secondary pages
-   0-10: Low priority

### Can I include hidden pages? {#faq-hidden-pages}

Yes, enable `llmsTxt.includeHidden` in the Site Settings. This is useful
for staging environments.

### Can I disable the Markdown output? {#faq-disable-markdown}

Yes, disable [llmsTxt.enableMarkdown](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/rtfirst/llms-txt:confval-enablemarkdown@main) in the
Site Settings. `.md` URLs then return a regular 404, and llms.txt only lists
the pages without the Markdown hints and the Markdown links.

### Why do some pages have no Markdown link in llms.txt? {#faq-no-markdown-link}

Pages of type "Link" or "Shortcut" only point to another page or URL and have
no content of their own, so llms.txt lists them without the Markdown link.
TYPO3 redirects them to their target, or shows the target page for a "Link" to
a page in TYPO3 14. The target page has its own entry if it belongs to the
site.

Mount points keep their Markdown link: they bring the content of the mounted
page into the site, which may not be listed anywhere else.

## Usage Questions {#faq-usage}

### How do I access the root page as Markdown? {#faq-root-page-md}

Use `/index.html.md` or `/.md`:

```text
https://example.com/index.html.md
```

### How do I access translated pages? {#faq-language-access}

Every language has its own llms.txt below its base, e.g.
`https://example.com/en/llms.txt`, which lists the translated pages. Use the
language prefix with the `.md` suffix for the content of a page:

```text
# English
https://example.com/en/about.md
# German
https://example.com/de/ueber-uns.md
```

### How do I refresh the cached content? {#faq-cache-refresh}

Clear the TYPO3 cache:

```bash
vendor/bin/typo3 cache:flush
```

Or in DDEV:

```bash
ddev typo3 cache:flush
```

Changes to the `llmsTxt.*` site settings are picked up by llms.txt
automatically, without clearing the cache.

## API Protection Questions {#faq-api-protection}

### Which HTTP header should I use for the API key? {#faq-api-key-header}

Use `X-LLM-API-Key`:

```bash
curl -H "X-LLM-API-Key: your-key" https://example.com/llms.txt
```

### Can I use a query parameter instead? {#faq-api-key-query}

Yes, use `api_key`:

```text
https://example.com/llms.txt?api_key=your-key
```

However, HTTP headers are recommended for security reasons.

## Troubleshooting {#faq-troubleshooting}

### The Markdown output is empty {#faq-empty-markdown}

- Check if the page has content elements
- Verify the page is not excluded from llms.txt
-   Clear all caches

### Content shows in wrong language {#faq-wrong-language}

- Verify your site language configuration
- Check if translations exist for the page
- Use the correct language prefix in the URL

### Some content elements are missing {#faq-missing-content}

The extension filters out:

-   Navigation elements
-   Footer content
-   Scripts and styles
-   Empty elements

If a specific content type is missing, you may need to create a custom
converter. See [Creating Custom Converters](https://docs.typo3.org/permalink/rtfirst/llms-txt:developer-custom-converter@main).
