Introduction

What does it do?

Typo3 4.0 introduced a new default skin. Our users generally prefer this new skin, but they complained about the icons: They were hard to distinguish from each other and they found the icons 'blurry' or fuzzy. This extension is an attempt to rectify those complaints by 'optimizing' the icons: Only icons are changed in this extension – no html, css etc. is touched.

You can install this extension and try it out. Uninstalling it returns you the whatever skin you were using before installing Daimi Skin.

Below examples of the kind of changes made are presented.

Furthermore this extension is meant to suggest how trivial changes in the user interface (UI) can improve the existing UI.

Screenshots

img-1 Illustration 1:Before (left) and after (right).

The following screenshot shows different aspects of the subtle changes made to the icons in the page tree: Improvements made to page tree icons """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

The 'Open' and 'Close' buttons – plus- and minus-signs – have been enlarged and the color of plus/minus has been made from a dark gray into pitch black.

The contrast of page icons has been improved. Our users had a hard time distinguishing between etc. the hidden, normal etc. page icons, if e.g. The sun was shining on their screens.

The icon for shortcuts also gave trouble. Here We have enlarged the arrow and improved the contrast.

Not shown in the illustration, is the folder icon: Our users had difficulty distinguishing it from the page icons, so we made it darker gray – instead of the almost white it was.

Improvements made to List module icons

img-2 The following screenshot shows different aspects of the subtle changes made to the icons in the list module:

First and foremost: Contrast! Each icon was evaluated: Those with colors were deemed visiually distinct and thus left virtually untouched.

The icons for moving elements up/down etc. were made of gray. Instead they were given black and a higher contrast.

Lastly, the show/hide button was confusing our users: It was too visually distinct. We redid the icon to blend more in among the other icons, which helped.

Other improvements

Further icons have been enhanced by adding contrast etc.

FAQ

Q: Will you maintain this extension?

A: The hope is that the Typo3 Design Team will incorporate the icons in this skin into the official Typo3 skin (or make new icons with a higher contrast). Until an improved Typo3 default skin is done, this skin will be maintained.

Known problems

None known. (this extension is the Typo3 4.0 default skin, with only icons changed).

To-Do list

If you have any ideas to improving icons, then please send me and email with your suggestions at ligaard@daimi.au.dk or you could consider joining the Typo3 HCI mailinglist.
